All About The Joyful Otter

Hi! I’m Terri Sullivan (Kiorihware) and welcome to The Joyful Otter! The Joyful Otter is Native owned and operated, with the help of two awesome teens!

The name for The Joyful Otter was an inspired idea created after meeting my little 6-year-old cousin Tawi:ne, spanning 5 generations. Tawi:ne is a Mohawk name meaning “Otter who playfully swims.” Her grandmother, Jayne (Karakwiiosta), whose name in Mohawk means “Beautiful Flowers”. Tawi:nes’ Mother, Wasontiiosta, means “She makes the night beautiful.” 

We opened our doors in May 2026. It took several weeks to change the interior.  It was decades old and well known for servicing vacuum cleaners, which recently moved to a larger building.  When we saw the sign saying it was for-lease, we called immediately. We also got lucky with a landlord who supports and cares for his tenants. It didn’t take long for us to move forward in the beautiful village where many small and larger businesses thrive. Moss and Mint owner, Alyssa, jumped in to help with the first opening day. She had her husband cover for her in her shop and came to help us. Now that’s a community I want to be a part of!   At The Joyful Otter you will find fashion, jewelry, decor, furniture, and more! We hope to see you soon!
